Family Fun Day - Bike Ride to Lunch and Hairspray

I had a lot to do today. The mounds of laundry in particular needed to be tackled because we start our spring break trip on Wednesday. But, it was a beautiful (but chilly!) day outside and my new fitness plan dictates that I do something active with my family on the weekends. Besides, Sophia is seven and it's not going to be cool to hang out with mom and dad very much longer. So, I got my priorities in order and we had a family fun day.

On my run the other day I found this tunnel leading under the railroad tracks. I suspected that it would lead to a canal and I wanted to check it out on bikes. Kenny's bike was almost too tall to fit through.

We had to cross a busy street but we did come out at a trail leading to the canal. From there it was a nice, flat, scenic ride to Hirschaid, a neighboring town.

We stopped for lunch at Brauerei Kraus. Their regular menu has several vegetarian offerings but somehow we hit them on Sundays or holidays when they have a condensed menu. Today there was only one vegetarian dish, salad with fried mozzarella sticks. I knew that each mozzarella stick had 100 fatty calories so I immediately gave three of them to Kenny and Sophia. They were really delicious but I still felt hungry after I ate. They just weren't satisfying. But, I did the best I could. It was an important lesson in portion control when eating out.

After lunch we went to post to see the Stable Theater's production of Hairspray. Sophia couldn't believe that there was a time in America when people were segregated and not treated fairly. Obama is the only president she remembers. I'm glad we're able to take her to see things that open up conversation about such topics.

The sun is down and the laundry is undone and my belly is growling because I didn't have high quality calories today. But, I'm glad I got my priorities straight so I could spend the day with my family.

What do you like to do on your family fun days?

  1. I hate going out to eat and not finding anything decent on the menu! Funny to hear it still happens abroad. :)

    1. It's a little bit tough being vegetarian in Germany, particularly if you want to pop in just anywhere.
