Sophia Update - More Affectionate

Sophie is starting to be a bit more affectionate. She smiles and waves hello and goodbye. She has started to say hi to us and not just Kicsi. ("Hi Kicsi" was one of her first phrases. ) She hugs us now and not just her doll and stuffed animals.

I don't know if she's had a growth spurt or what, but this morning she was really clumsy. She grazed her cheek with the corner of the bathroom cabinet this morning. She tripped and fell down in the store. She fell running outside. Falling a lot wasn't unusual when she was first learning to walk, but it seems a little strange now. Maybe she was still sleepy. She only took a 15 minute nap yesterday. She's napping better now so I'm relieved. Kenny said he stopped taking naps around two years old. I need Sophie to take naps until she goes to school! I need the time to get things done. She won't let me be on the computer at all, but she doesn't care if Kenny does things on the computer. When I try to even look at something briefly she cries and grabs at the mouse and keyboard. When Kenny does his business on the computer she wanders off and plays with her toys. Kenny probably thinks I have all kinds of time to do things during the day.

What's Cooking? - Buttermilk-Currant Scones with Lemon Glaze

Buttermilk-Currant Scones with Lemon Glaze
from Sunset Magazine

This was my first attempt at making scones, and I thought they turned out pretty well. I didn't handle the dough very much at all after I turned it out onto the floured surface.

Prep and Cook Time: About 45 minutes
Makes: 8 Scones
Top with strawberry jam and butter or whipped cream.

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cold butter, cut into chunks
3/4 cup buttermilk
1 large egg
1/2 cup dried currants
1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
2/3 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons lemon juice

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl or food processor, mix or whirl flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt to blend. Add butter and cut in with a pastry blender or pulse until mixture resembles coarse meal. If using a processor, scrape mixture into a bowl.

In a small bowl, whisk buttermilk and egg to blend. Add to flour mixture along with dried currants and lemon peel. Stir with a fork just until evenly moistened (dough will look crumbly).

Scrape dough onto a floured surface and, with lightly floured hands, work it into a ball, then pat into a 7-inch round about 1 3/4 inches thick. Cut dough into eight equal wedges. Arrange wedges 2 inches apart on a baking sheet.

Bake scones until tops are browned, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool about 10 minutes on baking sheet. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, stir together powdered sugar and lemon juice. Drizzle glaze over warm scones. Serve scones warm or let cool completely.

Sophia Update - Baby Stroller

Grammy would be very proud. We went to play at a friend's house today and Sophie's favorite thing to play with was a baby doll and stroller. I never really liked dolls but Grammy has been encouraging Sophie to play with them so she will be pleased that Sophie's showing an interest.

Sophia Update - Sophie Turns 18 Months Old

Sophie seems like she understands more every day. The other evening Kenny had left his dinner dishes on the coffee table. Sophie recognized that they were out of place and she picked them up. Not expecting her to understand me, I asked her if she would put the dishes in the dishwasher. She did! I got all teary. She's such a big girl.

She's starting to be more independent again. For awhile we would go to play group and she would cling to my leg, which was very strange because she used to be the most independent kid her age in the room. Now she's starting to venture out without me again.

She enjoys going to music class. She's starting to participate more by dancing, jumping, banging sticks, and singing. Maybe she'll be a musician. Music has always been our secret weapon when we have to deal with a fussy Sophie.

She's starting to talk to strangers. There was a couple with a dog at the mailbox the other day. Sophie was excited about their dog. She approached them and raised her hand and said an enthusiastic hi. They said hi back and then she pointed to me and said mama. Very important things to say! She doesn't have a huge vocabulary (mama, daddy, Kicsi, good juice, cheese, hi, good girl, dog, shoes) but she can recognize things in a book. We ask her what things are and she points to the appropriate object. I guess she'll be talking my ear off before I know it.
